My LEAST Favorite Part of Quilting

I HATE making quilt labels. When I put the last stitch in the binding, I like to think I'm finished with the quilt. Then it hits me - I still have to make the label. Some of my friends make the most amazing labels: pieced to match the quilt front (Judy R.), or otherwise lovely in so many ways. Me? I usually slap a label on as seen above - hastily written using a fabric pen, then (just as quickly) stitched into place.

Our guild is having our big quilt show this weekend, so I AM up against a deadline here. And as usual, I've put off the labels until the last minute. Oh well. The front of the quilt is lovely, at least.

What is your least favorite part of quilting?
I finished my friend's quilt. Nice and girly for a new granddaughter, don't you think?

Now that summer is about here, I'm ready for some summer reading. I'm needing some ideas for books to read. I like all kinds of novels, from mystery and suspense, to literary, to romance. I'd love to get your recommendations. Any suggestions for me?

My least favorite is when I have to do machine binding. It never seems to look right to me.

I'm right there with you on the labels thing. I don't like sleeves much either.

A friend of mine recommends Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks. Another friend recommends The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown. I haven't read either yet, but they are on my list.

I just finished Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. I found it uplifting--a testament to the human spirit.

My least favorite thing is basting the quilt! Always seems to take forever! :)

I'm not fond of labels either. Almost none of my quilts are labeled. Future generations are going to have to solve a mystery...

Basting is a bugaboo. I have hardwood floors, which make it both easier and harder. My knees and back are killing me by the time I'm done with a non-baby quilt.

As for labels, I've given up on them. What I do instead, is find a place on the quilt where it makes sense to use the quilting stitches to add my signature, the year, and the name of the quilt. It's less likely to come off in the wash, too!
